Step 2 - Share Your Design Brief

There is always a different world that we create in our minds; a world which we wish for. Surji had brought to life a world of her dreams through this Manchaha, Sapno ki Duniya which means the world of dreams. She weaved a river at the bottom of the rug after which she made mountains. She says "I dream of living near a river bank”, she loves water and has always dreamt of a house which is closest to nature. Moving beyond the mountains is a welcoming varanda of her dream house which is adorned with Rangoli and flowers. “I will talk to my friends from that verandah, I love talking to people and socializing. I am sure if that veranda happens to be in real that will be my favorite spot at my dream house”, she narrates with excitement. She also weaved steps that ended up in Rangolies. She wanted to write welcome on her rug but owing to her limited knowledge of alphabets she was able to put together a few alphabets like W, E, F & V. Her love for colorful flowers is clearly visible as she had decorated her rug with a lot of petals and flowers.

The rug Satrangi Pahaad or the seven colored mountains is a creative reflection of Surji’s imagination. “I love mountains and the rainbow, hence I weaved big mountains and painted them all in seven shades of rainbow,” narrates Surji with a confident smile. She went on saying that initially she was very scared to even start but then she decided to follow her heart and soon the design idea started floating inside her mind and that is how the rug got its shape.

‘Mann ki saree’ which translates to the saree of my mind describes how Surji thought of the unique geometric pattern on her rug. Although not a fan of grey, she merged the shades together well in a manner that brings to life the glimmer of mirrors on a matt surface. She adorned the drape of the saree with flowers for a more direct feminine touch over the grey base. Her understanding of design really flowed through, leaving our designers stunned at her depth of design. She shares ,”This rug is anything but sad. I took something simple and added colour to it through design and emotion.”

‘Meri Saree’, which means my saree, is how Surji recalls her favourite saree. During her daughter’s wedding preparation she asked her what she wanted as a gift. The answer was, “Your saree with the boxes, leheriyas and thick borders.” Without any hesitation she took it out for her, and expresses how a mother’s love is beyond any material object. “I really loved that saree, and I’m so happy my daughter loved it too. Love for family is more than objects, and my rug will bring that into the home.”
