Step 2 - Share Your Design Brief

The weaver, Dhafali, wanted to develop a design that has patches of bright colour throughout it. With colour in mind she drew from patterns in everyday life from her breakfast meal to the window in her room. The borders are a combination of her love for Lehariya sarees and flowers. She calls her rug Chunari, which means a drape.

Designer weaver, Dhafali draws her inspiration from the clothes around her. The leheriya pattern in her sari prompted her to make something different with that design. With an aspiration to create a unique rug, she makes use of different shaped buttons to express that rug weaving has bound together her life in the same way as a button secures two pieces of fabric together.

Dhafali Devi has once again put forth her childlike whimsy into her rug, Paani, which means water. She starts the rug with waves from an ocean she’s only heard of, but hopes to experience one day. The multiple colors representing the individual waves emerging from the horizon, create a sense of motion, the start of a journey through her mind the past 4 months. She has placed candle diyas and biscuits at the border of her ocean, reflecting the things she loves, the light of positivity and her children.

She has beautifully woven waves on the top and bottom of the rug signifying that water is an essential element for this fruit to grow. In the center of the rug, one can notice a village pot, called Kalash in the local language, which is used to water the plantation.
