Dahi Handi
Maina Devi, a skilled weaver, has created a beautiful hand-knotted rug, her manchaha, that captures the essence of her favorite festival, Janmashtmi. This festival celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna and is full of fun and joy. One of the festival's highlights is "Matki Fod" or "Dahi Handi", where communities hang a clay pot filled with yogurt, butter, or other delicious milk-based food at a convenient or tall height. Young men and boys form teams, create a human pyramid, and try to reach or break the pot. Maina went to watch this exciting competition in her village and she got inspired by the scenes and decorations that found their place into her rug. She handcrafted a matki (pot) filled with butter and suspended it by a rope. She decorated her rug with festive designs and named it after the game of "Dahi-Handi."
