sashawan (c.1900)This antique Sashawan runner, woven circa 1900 in the Caucasus region, displays a geometric design set against a rich mahogany ground. Rows of serrated motifs in ebony, ivory, coral red, sky blue, and saffron create a vibrant sequence, their stepped forms echoing tribal symbolism and rhythm. The interplay of bold colors against the deep field gives the composition both energy and balance. The borders are defined by alternating ivory and ebony lozenges, a strong linear guard that frames the field with clarity and structure. As an antique example of Sashawan weaving, this runner exemplifies the tradition’s mastery of bold geometry and color harmony, executed with both strength and refinement.
