Durga Devi has woven this rug reminiscing the days of kite festival. During the festival, her children always visit relatives residing in a nearby village named Kanwat and gleefully run after kites that float around while falling from the sky. Durga Devi took this thought forward and made train like pattern on the bottom the rug and imagined the kites flying over it. On the top of the rug, she has drawn arrowhead patterns to represent the speed of the train. She calls her rug ‘Chuk-Chuk’ because when a train passes by, it makes that rhythmic sound, which is very fascinating for the children.

Through rug she is telling the story of her village. From the blue of the sky she wakes up to, to the flowers that remind her of her village when she’s travelling this rug is her ode to Aaspura, her village. Durga is quite the romantic weaving hearts, wedding art and leheriya designs- all of this because she missed her husband who was travelling while she weaved this rug.

She loves grapes or ‘Angoor’ and she chose the fruit as the central theme for this rug. She has woven these grapes at various places on the rug. When knotted the design, one column at a time and used to spend many hours at night thinking about what she will weave the next day. She chose to make motifs inspired by Shakkarpara (common village snack) because she believes that this shape is in vogue as most designer weavers knot it on their rugs.

The rug Rangeeli Dhaariya, or colorful stripes is a reflection of the simplicity that surrounds our weaver designers. She has designed and weaved colorful pattern of stripes and boxes to beautify the rug. To the buyer of the rug, this is what they had to say, “We love colors and we hope that whoever buys this rug, be blessed with happy colors and prosperity”.
