Gayatri lives with her family in Pachhudala village in Rajasthan. She has two sons, both of whom study in school. Her husband works as a tailor in the village. She has two goats, who she calls Kali and Dholi(meaning black and white). She has been weaving since 7 years, and aspires to make more of her original designs.
AkdaGayatri took inspiration from her ‘Leheriya’ saree to make this rug. There was one particular design of ‘Akda’(curved metal hook) from her saree that she liked a lot. She created a wavy pattern of the ‘Akda’ on the lower part of the rug. This being her first original design, she was very confused initially about what to weave on the rug. She used to have restless nights thinking about the patterns and designs. Her husband being a tailor, she had seen him stitch varied designs onto the clothes. She took inspiration from him, and started designing the rug. The rug showcases repeating patterns of flowers, leaves, and wavy motifs in the upper part. It took Gayatri a month to complete the rug. She calls the rug ‘Mera Leheriya’-meaning, my Leheriya, after her saree where she had seen her favourite design.
