Shanti is a talented weaver from the small village of Manpura in Rajasthan. She is a perfect example of ‘one man army’ and takes the entire responsibility of her loom in the village. “Since, childhood the art of weaving rugs inspired me. I used to see my father weaving rugs and I was always curious to learn this art. I started to weave rugs when I was 10 years old, everyone in the village was surprised to see me doing that”, she narrated with a huge burst of laughter on her face.
Rangeeli ChaddarThe rug rangeeli chaddar or the colorful bed sheet is a take on the popular printing styles that are visible in the interiors of Rajasthan. The weaver, Shanti started off by weaving simple designs with smaller motifs and then proceeded to make big flowers and motifs. “It was my first manchaha and wasn’t easy to think of what to weave, I started off by weaving designs that first strike my mind. The thought of – what to weave never let me sit free therefore I started to observe things around me this is how I weaved my rangeeli chaddar into my rug” she explained with a smile.
