Santosh is 24 years old and led this Manchaha project with her relative Suman. She is married and lives in Manpura with a massive family including her three children and her 5 goats, who she has named. She’s fond of all aspects of nature including her garden, farm animals, and even stray dogs. Suman is 20 years old and is already an expert rug maker, but her pride and joy is her long ever-flowing hair.
Both weavers of the rug Deepak knew that they wanted a very intricate design that was a feast for the eyes. They started with floral patterns similar to the ones Santosh visualizes while she maintains her backyard garden. The dynamic duo then added deepaks, sandwiched by shakkarparas, symbolic of the celebratory candles they lit and the diamond-shaped snacks they ate during this year’s Diwali. To add a bit of color, panels of contrasting wool and silk were knotted throughout the rug, with each layer telling a different chapter of its story. After the festive and repetitive designs and out of Santosh’s love for the outdoors, an abundance of nature was added filling the rug with butterflies, turtles, shrubs, pots with creeping vines, and flowers inspired by batwings. The rug finally signs off with an intricate local “Janjira” pattern, crop stalks, and an abstract sky.
