Kaushalya lives in the village Kishorpura and has been weaving since the past 10 years. She feels privileged that she was given an opportunity to create her own design. She weaves every carpet thinking that it must bring warmth in the home of the owner. She has 4 children and she has woven this carpet mostly, with her newborn in her arms. She says that holding her baby while weaving was meditative for her.
When Kaushalya started thinking about the design to be woven on the rug, she felt scared and confused. After sleepless nights, one day while looking at her Bindi (a gem worn on the forehead between the eyebrows) she got her inspiration for the design. An ancient Indian tradition to wear a Bindi in the center of a woman’s forehead represents Shakti or strength. She imagined various designs of the traditional bindis and tried to re-create the same on the rug. The distinct color of this rug is a result of overdyeing which is a traditional process of rug revival. Overdyeing adds liveliness to the rug and makes the original hues look more prominent along with adding a rustic look to it
To the owner of this rug“This rug conveys my emotional attachment with my family and the bindi as a representation of me , as the woman who nurtures this family. I hope the owner of this rug receives happiness, prosperity and well-being each time they step on this rug”.
