Phoolwati from Achrol, has only been a weaver for 3 and a half years and was taught by the local Bunkar Sakhi. Before weaving, she was a homemaker and took care of her three children but never earned money on her own. With her first paycheck as a weaver, she spent it on necessities for the home and family but plans to spend her Artisan Originals' income on something special for herself.
Phoolwati is a newcomer to the Artisan Originals initiative, however, with her first rug, Jai, her skills far surpass her experience. The rug's intricacy stems from her desire to place so many of her ideas onto a single canvas ranging from geometric motifs to a flowing background. Because it was her first Artisan Originals rug, she decided to start with a very safe design approach and used symmetry and shapes including checkered boxes, diamonds, and the leheriya pattern. After a brief visit from the quality supervisor, she was convinced that taking risks and using the full capability of her imagination would lead to a much more unique and beautiful rug. She placed her interpretation of a ship at the center and surrounded it with flowers, arrows, and indistinct designs synonymous with her whimsy. Not to let her confidence go to waste, she signed the rug by placing her name proudly on the top.
