Weavers Soniya and Mausmi, 35 and 25 year-old respectively, are sisters from the Kanwat village of Rajasthan. They are married into the same family and mother a daughter and 2 sons together. They learned how to weave from a neighbour and have steadily progressed to now designing their own Manchaha rugs.
Aladin ka chiragOne of the rare examples of how a rug comes to life influenced by the weaver’s experience and current emotions, this rug by Sonia is a manifestation of her wishful thinking. The chirag (Aladdin's wish-granting lamp) is weaved on the top of the rug along with motifs depicting the things she would wish for- wealth, clothes, jhoomar (chandelier) etc. The other end of the rug features a half-done peacock as Soniya ran out of the yarn matching the rug’s colour palette. She also expressed her wish to rub the lamp and become a peacock so that she can dance through the village without having to wear a veil.
