Savitri is our weaver from the small city of Kekri in Rajasthan. She is 30 years old and has been weaving rugs from past 15 years now. She is a mother of three girls and one boy; all of them are school-goers and are her only asset. Due to some health issues, Savitri does not keep well and her children help her in all possible ways that they can. Her rugs are not only her rugs but also the hopes and blessings of her small little family.
The rug mehndi wala is inspired from the traditional Indian designs that are made with henna (a reddish-brown dye) on hands. “As and when I looked at the color, I decided that I’ll weave mehndi design on my rug. There was no second thought to that”, says Savitri with humungous confidence. The pattern is almost similar to the mehndi designs that are made on hands during auspicious occasions and festivals in India. The checkboxes and the minimal pattern of flower is truly an eye-catcher.
