Harinarayan and his wife, Champa are a happy couple, with 2 daughters, a son, 5 goats and 2 baby goats in their home at Aaspura village of Rajasthan. While the eldest daughter is married, the younger children are pursuing BA in education. Although Champa could not receive education due to gender discrimination against girl education prevailing in the villages, she is glad to have been able to provide education to her daughters. The couple has been weaving for more than 2 decades now but had never got a chance to make their own design before. Excited to have this opportunity, the couple has now woven multiple designs for the artisan collection.
KaneKane is a rug that was freely designed and created by our weavers Champa and her husband, Harinarayan. This isn’t their first original design but with this particular rug, they decided to focus on their surroundings or what’s around us, or “Kane”( in their local dialect Marwari, this word means ‘near me’). The design of this rug uses inspiration from a variety of things found in Champa’s life including her old and new house, plants, shakarpara, tools, and wildlife. The color scheme is based on the blues/tans present during and after monsoons. The almost monotone color scheme is what first stands out but when looked at closely, you see that every individual element is completely different. The rug is representative of how beautiful things that are already here in front of us, simply existing with or without our attention.
