Dwelling in Manpura, Laxmi has been weaving for 8 years now. Her children, aged 18, 16 and 11 are enrolled in school and her husband is a mason. When she was asked to design her rug for the first time, Laxmi was so excited and scared at the same time that she spent sleepless nights thinking about the design she was going to make the next day. Unlike many other weavers, Laxmi likes to use light colours in her rugs such as yellow and pink. She used her children’s school books to give her imagination a shape. When she is not weaving, Laxmi takes care of the house and her children.
Designer weaver, Laxmi has an intricate design sense which she carves on her canvas of warp and weft. With such detailed designing of flowers, flowers pots, houses, she has beautifully placed the central motif inspired by the dog flower. Through her design, Laxmi reassures her belief in magic and fairy tales by weaving two fairies (meaning Pari in Hindi), as it was dream come true for her when she finally completed the construction of her house built of bricks and mortar in the village.
To the owner of the rug “There’s magic everywhere. Just believe in yourself and you will make a difference.”
