Savitri Devi is a weaver from a village named, Samod. A weaver for more than 20 years, Savitri Devi is associated with Jaipur Rugs for about 3 years now. Her decision to associate with Jaipur Rugs came when she saw that the company has a transparent system of working with the weavers and asked on her own for a loom to be installed in her house. Her husband is also a weaver and the happy couple often weaves rugs together with love. They are happy that weaving has given them a constant source of income and encouragement to do better in their lives. They have 3 children who are studying in school, of which one has just taken his final exams. When not weaving, the weavers share the household work and Savitri Devi also takes care of her 2 goats and a calf, along with the family.
Designer weaver Savitri Devi has created this geometrical pattern keeping tiles, which are called chowkri in Hindi, as her design inspiration. She saw these tiles in the kitchen of a house, on the cover of a magazine. Savitri Devi brings out her joyous nature on her rug, with the play of bright and happy colors. She includes mathematical symbols of multiplication, addition and division on her rug which is a representation of her deep desire to study further.
To the owner of this rug “Every simple thing has beauty in it. I found beauty in simple boxes and mathematics and I hope you find joy in the many beautiful things which life has to offer”
