Urmila is a 31 year-old weaver from Kanwat, Rajasthan. She learned the skill from her father in Banpur, also in Rajasthan. She is a mother to a daughter, Kushi, and a son, Sahail. Urmila is married to a driver and she wishes to learn driving from her husband. Urmila is a highly observant weaver whose first Manchaha is a celebration of her promising artistic skills.
Chidiya gharIn this rug, Urmila has portrayed a zoo, even though she has only seen it on TV and never in real life. She has woven different animals, and even included details like the gate to the zoo in brown on the left side of the rug. A small detail of a fallen hat, representing how people often lose things in the crowd in a zoo, exemplifies Urmila’s eye for the small things that breathe life to her creation. ‘Chidiya ghar’ means nest, or house of birds, and it brings out the very essence of nature.
