Gulabi Devi is 45 years old and she has been a weaver with Jaipur Rugs since the past 11 years. She is a mother of 4 girls and 2 boys. While two elder daughters are now married the rest of her children are pursuing their education and are financially supporting her. Her husband is a tailor and lives in the city away from his family. Gubali Devi is a strong woman who believes that it is her responsibility to provide for a good life for her children and through her income she has now built a concrete house for her family in her village, Jhadli.
Gulabi has made horizontal patterns on her rug, by taking inspiration from rain drops (Baarish). During the rainy season, she usually sips tea while sitting in her courtyard with her daughters. One day she decided to celebrate these joyous moments by involving her daughters, Rajju and Annu with her, in the ideation and weaving of the rug. Together the ladies wove patterns inspired by droplets of water and waves. They also adorned the rug with patterns inspired from flowers and hearts.
To the owner of the rug “May this rug bring freshness in your house just like that rains.”
