A highly-skilled couple from Narhet Rajasthan, Babu Lal and Kalli Devi, 45 years and 40 years old respectively, have been weaving together for the past 20 years. While Babu Lal learnt weaving from a factory in Manoharpur, Kalli Devi picked up the art form from him very quickly. They have a rare and fine balance of technical and creative prowess, with Babu Lal wielding the former, thanks to his prior experience in a factory. Babu Lal is stern and quiet and Kalli Devi is playful and talkative, but they are extremely compatible, something that reflects in their creations. They are parents to three sons.
Mori
Featuring the Afghan Mori design, this rug requires a highly skilled artisan with abundant technical knowledge, something that fits Babu Lal’s oeuvre perfectly. He taught Kalli Devi the pattern in a previous rug. But a little into the rug, they decided to change the design and try something else. However, they eventually settled on the mori as it was looking the best to them. The yellow colouration in between the patterns was Kalli Devi’s idea as Babu Lal continued to weave the Mori design impeccably. The result is a highly subtle and graceful rug that is a lesson in calculated, skilled design.
