Mulchand, Sikandar, Mubarik Ali & Ajit are all inmates at the Bikaner Central Jail and weave rugs in the prisoners’ rehabilitation program. All four of them are experienced weavers and sat together to figure out how to design strong motifs on their rug. They all love nature and hope that the arid region of Bikaner slowly becomes lusher with the seasons.
Jeev JantuJeev Jantu which translates to living organisms is how the weavers describe their rug. The rug depicts a wide array of flora and fauna and sets the scene of a village in the lap of nature. Mulchand and Sikandar have woven fish, flowers, houses, and pigeons while Mubarik Ali and Ajit have woven hearts, flowers and lotuses into their rug. Sikandar says, “All living organisms are beautiful when they live in harmony with nature.” Therefore, the weavers have used a subtle color tone throughout the rug to represent accordance with nature.
