Prabhu Dayal is 51 years old and is from Jaipur, Rajasthan. Although he is one of the older inmates, he started weaving as a part of the prison project looking for something to stay busy with. It soon sparked his interest so much that he would start weaving motifs at every opportunity, filling each rug with unique patterns.
Mashgul‘Mashgul’ means absorbed, busy and occupied. Prabhu Dayal filled his carpet with intricate patterns, not leaving space to breathe. Remembering his mother who used to scold him when he used to be busy playing in the mud, he thought of a word that brings all of those memories together. In his rug there are elephants, umbrellas, blooming potted plants and a myriad of traditional patterns. He’s not a fan of geometric designs, although gave a shot at a few places to create a pattern. In the top left of the carpet is an angel, which Prabhu specifically wove in to watch over the family that his rug goes to.
