The Design Story
meri pehchaanMeri PehchaanGuddi Devi learned weaving from her mother-in-law. In the beginning, they sat together at the loom, working side by side. Over time, she began weaving on her own. This rug was her very first Manchaha. She didn’t start with a fixed idea. Instead, she followed the suggestions of the people around her. At the beginning, she made wave-like patterns, a choice suggested by her children. Then came the traditional diamond patterns, something her mother-in-law guided her towards. After that, she added small leaf patterns forming a farm, an idea from her husband. The rug slowly filled with these different inputs. But the part she remembers most is the top section. There, she stopped following suggestions. She let her hands move on their own, without thinking about what anyone had said. That is where the design feels the freest. She says that until that moment, she was weaving for others. It was only when she started weaving for herself that she began to enjoy it. You can see that shift in the rug. It moves from guided choices to something more personal, more open. With this, she named her Manchaha ‘Meri Pehchaan’, which means ‘My Identity’.
