Mausam is one of only two women and the youngest person to take up taani mounting for Jaipur Rugs. She’s a lifelong learner and wants to know everything about rug making, which is why she now can manage a rug from taani to off-the-loom.
Seema is 33 years old and has two kids, two boys aged 13 and 10. Her husband is a school teacher so education plays an integral part in all of their lives. She has been weaving for 10 years and the extra income really helps the family thrive while also allowing her to explore her creativity.
Both women are from Tigariya.
Batakh
Taking a month and a half to finish, Mausam and her sister-in-law Seema were an incredibly duo, creating a massively intricate design for their first Artisan Originals rug, filled with inspirations from their daily lives. While the rug was knotted equally by both the young women, Mausam deserves a lot of the credit. She mounted the taani (warps) herself and then continued to design and knot the rug alongside her sister-in-law. Most of the rug’s inspiration came from the saris and dupattas that make up their wardrobe. Elements from around their home like flowers, trees, and vines, and even religious symbols like the Hindu swastika played an integral part throughout the rug’s design but the most interesting element, which is somewhat hidden, are the trio of ducks on the central right side. It’s for this reason that the name “Batakh”, which means duck, was given. What’s even more interesting is that the inspiration for ducks was as random as their placement on the rug. Mausam’s other sister-in-law, Sajana, visited one day and said the rug is missing ducks, so she knotted them in. The duo now hopes to make more Artisan Original rugs.
