Phooli Devi belongs to Dhanota in Rajasthan and lives with her family consisting of her husband and four children; two boys and two girls. At 40 years of age and a full house to manage, it’s astonishing but not surprising to know that she’s been weaving for the past 20 years, the last 4 of which have been with Jaipur Rugs. Even though her husband is a medical lab technician, Phooli Devi enjoys the financial independence of making money on her own at home. It provides for even more support of her family’s wellbeing.
Phooli Devi has always been a resourceful person and when she had the opportunity to create her own rug from the ground up, she chose the pattern and colors that would provide a visual kick without the need overcomplicate the design. She chose the repetitive checkered pattern because it reminded her of the popular snack, chikki, or peanut brittle and because she’s also seen other weavers partially use it in their rugs, but decided to use it everywhere because of its symmetry. She also ensured that each square look similar but not exact to add even more originality to the rug. She’s very happy to have made this rug and is proud to know that her hard work will be a piece of art for someone’s home.
