Our 30 years old weaver, Sohani lives in Raghunathpura with her husband, children, in-laws and 2 goats. Her husband works in a factory and her children are school-going. Sohani has been weaving for more than 15 years and is working with Jaipur Rugs for about 3 years now. She is proud to have made a rug with her own design and looks forward to making more of them. When not weaving, Sohani takes care of the house and the entire family.
Designer weavers Sohani Devi and Geeta Devi take inspiration from forest and wildlife for their rug. Spread across the rug, one can find headshots of wolves, snakes, cows and butterflies, all the animals found in the forest nearby. For this reason, she fondly calls her rug Van, which is a Hindi word for forest, because she likes to go there and observe the animals in their habitat. To give a more realistic feel of a forest, Sohani Devi and Geeta Devi have woven some leaves which are naturally found flying in a forest. At the bottom of the rug, she has drawn strings of flowers, which are taken from Bandhanwar, a decorative item used on doors in the houses. Unlike other weavers, Sohani Devi and Geeta Devi prefer to use same colour scheme throughout their rug.
To the owner of this rug “This rug is as pure as nature, take care of it.”
