Soniya Devi lives in a village named Kanwat. She lives in a joint family along with her 2 school going children who are in 9th standard and 11th standard respectively. Her husband stays away from the family and works in a brick factory in Punjab. Soniya Devi has been weaving for more than 20 years now and gets more enthusiastic about weaving with passage of time. The happiness she felt by weaving one rug in her own design has motivated her to weave more of such rugs. She dreams to provide her children with the best of everything so they can grow up to become professionals on day.
Rural women weaver, Soniya Devi, was motivated to become the designer of her own rug after she saw some of her village friends design rugs in the Artisan Originals collection. She has a penchant for cooking and she has named her rug after a vegetable, ‘Gobhi’ which is the Hindi term for cabbage. She has woven flowers inspired by the shape of a cabbage and has decorated the rest of the rug with patterns that are usually found on Rajasthani textiles. A distinct pattern on her rug is that of a Shakkarpara which is a popular snack in her village.
To the owner of the rug “I try to do better every day. This rug will inspire you to do the same.”
