Laxmi Devi lives in a small village called Kishanpur in Rajasthan. She picked up the art of weaving in her childhood, and has been weaving since 22 years now. She has 3 children: 2 daughters and a son. Her husband works as a mason in the village. She says that carpet weaving enables her to pay fees for her children’s education, and also gives her the freedom to imagine beyond the skies.
Imaarat
While having dinner one day, Laxmi Devi’s eyes stumbled upon her daughter’s open book. Within the book, she saw an image of a building and it captured her fancy completely. With such ornate architecture flooding her mind, she soon decided to translate her imagination into her rug. Meanwhile, her elder daughter had just completed her school, and was now to enter a college. Overwhelmed by her happy surroundings, she also decided to make a temple and a ‘Kumbh’- a symbol to mark an auspicious beginning of the good times ahead. She calls her rug ‘Imaarat’-meaning a building. Having laid the foundation for her family’s dreams, she hopes to build her own ‘Imaarat’ someday.
