Sunita Devi lives with her husband and two children in Udaypuria, a village in Rajasthan. She has been weaving since 15 years and narrates with great pride how using her skill as a weaver, she is supporting her family’s livelihood.
UtsavSunita Devi names her rug ‘Utsav’ which means a festival, a symbol of joy and celebration in her village and uses this as a theme for her rug. Majority of the rug is covered with lights that are seen in abundance during the festive activities and stars in the sky because this is the only time when people gather and enjoy together at night in the village. She weaves bats and balls on the rug which are used by children to play cricket during the time of holidays in the village. On her rug, one can also see 3 women carrying pitchers of water, which represents the common struggle of village life, as it is a daily activity for a woman in the villages to fetch water since there is no direct supply of water in most of the houses.
