Muktilal and Savitri live in a small village in Samod, in Rajasthan. They have two sons and one daughter, all of them currently studying in school. Muktilal has been weaving carpets for last 37 years of his life while his wife Savitri started accompanying him for last 19 years.
The weaver designer couple always had a strong desire to create a rug which is exclusive and an unmatched piece of beauty. With this strong urge, they thought of displaying nature’s beauty on the carpet. They knotted beautiful butterfly motifs at center of the rug as they wanted their creation to be symbolic of God’s beautiful creations. Deciding to make their butterflies look charming, they filled the motifs with a design they saw on a Gamla’, Hindi word for earthen pots kept in their house. The intricate design used as fillers around the rug, have been inspired from Savitri’s saree (an Indian attire wore by females). They call their rug Darwaaza, which means a door. The weaver couple believes that there exists an entirely different world on the other side of ‘Darwaza’ (hindi name for main gate of the house), and that world holds secrets hidden. They have translated this belief to give their rug it’s name.
