The Design Story
marine driveMarine DriveWhen this Manchaha was first started, the weavers decided to begin with the design of fish nets. But midway through the process, the original artisans couldn’t continue. The rug was then handed over to three experienced weavers — Nanu Singh, Durga, and Mukesh. They were told what had already been woven, and Nanu Singh had an idea: if there’s a fish net, why not weave the ocean next? So the three of them began to build their vision of the sea, but not just the ocean. They wanted to capture something more poetic: the way light dances on water. With every color they had, they started weaving reflections, creating a surface that shimmered and moved like waves catching the glow of city lights. To them, the finished piece reminded them of Marine Drive in Mumbai, a place they had only seen in photographs, but often dreamed of visiting. That dream gave this Manchaha its name — a woven ocean reflecting a city they’ve never been to, but hold close in their hearts.
