The Design Story
kesariyaKesariyaA Manchaha is a reflection of the weaver’s personal thoughts and surroundings, and when its creation aligns with Indian festivals, it becomes a vibrant tapestry of celebration. Maya Devi’s Manchaha is a beautiful example of this, capturing the essence of two distinct festivals: Makar Sankranti, known for its kite flying, and Holi, the festival of colors. This hand-knotted rug bursts with traditional hues that symbolize the festive spirit. In the lower middle, Maya Devi has woven a kite with traditional motifs, symbolizing her love for the kite flying festival. She said her husband helps her to fly a kite as she doesn’t know how to do it. She laughingly added that sometimes she just stands holding the thread of an already flown kite. The rug is further adorned with vibrant diamond motifs and the lively colors of Holi. Maya Devi named her Manchaha “Kesariya,” meaning “Saffron,” as a tribute to the rich, warm tones that embody both the festivals and her joyous experiences.
