The Design Story
triveniTriveniRukmani Devi’s rug holds three rivers coming together. At the centre of this rug is a large water pot. Rukmani Devi has imagined it as a place where three rivers come together. All the water of the rivers is saved in her water pot. Lines move towards it from different directions, from top to bottom. Around this, she has filled the space with patterns she sees every day—wave-like forms, flowers, and diamond shapes. The rug feels full, where each part finds its place. Beyond the design, there is a deeper story woven into this carpet. Seven years ago, an accident left her without her senses. It changed her life in ways she had not expected. But she did not step away from weaving. Instead, she found a different way to work. She began sitting at the loom with her eyes closed, letting the design form in her mind before her hands followed. What she could not hear, she began to feel more closely. This rug comes from that space. It is built from memory, from imagination, and from the love of rivers she carries within herself. She named her Manchaha ‘Triveni’, which means ‘sacred juncture of three rivers’.
