The Design Story
gujariyaGujariyaDurga and Sumitra, the mother-daughter duo, weave side by side, but they rarely plan together. Each follows her own thoughts, letting ideas appear as they come. Durga Devi has been weaving for nearly fifteen years; Sumitra learned the craft from her mother. Their styles are different, yet they sit in an easy rhythm. In this rug, the two of them created a scattered world of motifs — a line of ‘shakkarpara,’ (Indian sweet snack), round ‘laddoos’, a unique tree, and many small patterns they tried on the spot. They enjoy experimenting, and the rug carries that playful energy. What ties the piece together are the three “Gujariya” they wove, inspired by a saree they once saw, where three “milkmaids” were printed in a row. That image stayed with them, and it eventually became the name of the rug. They also added three matkas, keeping the theme alive. The result is a free-flowing Manchaha filled with their curiosity, their memories, and their constant urge to try something new.
