The Design Story
desh rangdesh rangwhen dhafali devi was given a round rug to weave, she wondered if she could create a circle within a circle to create an illusion of two carpets layered into one. and she followed that instinct. in the outer ring, she wove small, muted patterns that mirror the dunes of the rajasthan desert. the inner circle carries stronger colours. inspired by the indian national flag, she divided it into three bands of orange, white, and green. in the green section, she added farms and tiny plant motifs. at the centre, she created a distinctive pattern drawn from the bedsheet and pop designs in her own home. and at the top, she wove two houses along with the traditional shakkarpara motif, a nod to local culture. through this rug, dhafali wanted to bring the landscape around her and the world she identifies with into the weave. she named her manchaha “desh rang,” meaning “colours of the country.”
