The Design Story
akashAkashLaada Devi has been weaving for over ten years. She says she cannot imagine her life without it. For her, weaving is not just work; it is part of who she is. In this Manchaha rug, she weaves her feeling of the sky. The colours move like light shifting above, sometimes calm, sometimes restless. The surface is filled slowly, patiently, with patterns that speak of long hours at the loom and hands that do not stop. Zig-zag lines and checkered forms come from the floor coverings she sees every day. Between them appear diamond shapes, inspired by ‘shakkarpara,’ her favourite sweet snack. These small details make the rug feel personal, almost like a memory woven into cloth. “ Just like looking at the sky makes you feel free, weaving Manchaha makes me feel free; it offers a sky full of opportunities to me”, Laada Devi says. To honour this feeling, she named this Manchaha “Akash” (Sky).
