The Design Story
stambhStambhRukmani Devi weaves by trusting what she sees and what stays with her. After losing her hearing, her way of working became more inward. She lets the design form in her mind, then follows it with her hands. In this rug, the right side holds a large pillar, just like the one she sees outside her home. It stands firm, simple and familiar, almost like a fixed point in her everyday view. She said that this pillar is the representation of the support she gets from her family. Like a pillar, they stand tall in her life. On the left, she has woven a geometric peacock. It is not detailed in a realistic way, but built through sharp lines and forms, giving it a strong presence. Between these, different paths begin to appear, connecting and separating different farms that spread across the rug. The rug feels like a map of what surrounds her. You can almost imagine her surrounded by farms and a tall pillar standing outside her home. After this very pillar, she named the rug ‘Stambh’ (Pillar).
