The Design Story
mor aur morniMor aur MorniThis Manchaha is woven by Hariram and Shanti ji, a husband-and-wife duo who have worked side by side for years. They do not always discuss what they will weave. Yet their designs meet naturally. They say there is a constant connection between them. Shanti often knows what Hariram will weave next without him saying a word. The duo has a distinctive style of working. Hariram works in a straightforward manner. His designs carry simple lines, clean divisions, and minimal patterns. He builds the structure of the rug that is steady, balanced, and calm. Shanti ji brings decoration into that structure. She fills spaces with flowers, birds, diamonds, and tiny motifs. She has woven peacock, peahen and small figures, adding life and detail across the surface. The rug holds both approaches without conflict. His simplicity gives space to her intricacy. Her motifs soften his geometry. When the rug was finished, they named it “Mor aur Morni,” (Peacock and Peahen) where Hariram is a peacock, and Shanti is a peahen.
