The Design Story
bidjar,iran (c.1950)Design Story
An antique Bidjar Rug with Stepped Medallion Design, Kurdistan, Iran, Circa 1950
A bold medallion composition defines this finely woven Bidjar rug. Set against a warm coral ground, a sequence of interconnected, stepped diamond medallions unfolds along the field, articulated in deep navy and softened by paler accents. Each medallion is densely patterned with geometric motifs, lending depth and movement to the overall structure. The main border, rendered in a rich navy, features a continuous pattern of stylized angular elements, while a narrow outer border in dark brown provides a grounding frame.
City Story
Bidjar rugs from northwestern Iran are hand-knotted and renowned for their exceptional strength and durability, often called the “Iron Rugs of Persia.” Woven with the symmetric Turkish knot, their dense structure gives them unmatched resilience. Classic patterns include the Herati (fish) motif, diamond medallions, and all-over floral lattices. Bold rosettes, angular vines, and geometric ornament add movement and refinement. Typically crafted with fine wool pile on a cotton foundation, Bidjar rugs reflect both village traditions and Kurdish tribal influences.
Most Bidjar rugs are woven in large formats, often for halls and grand interiors, which adds to their rarity and expense. Their impressive size, dense construction, and intricate patterning make them some of the most labor-intensive Persian rugs to produce. A rich palette of deep reds, navy blues, and ivory, accented with greens and yellows, enhances their elegance and depth.
