The Design Story
gautariyaGautariyaRamkali, Sangeeta, and Anjani Devi have woven a warm invitation into their Manchaha, asking visitors to visit their village and meet them. They named it “Gautariya” - “Guests” - a tribute to the way they welcome people into their homes. Their rug tells a story of hospitality, beginning with betel leaves, a traditional mouth freshener offered to guests in their village. Next, they depicted the winding roads of their village, which lead through the fields they plan to show their guests. Additionally, the weavers crafted a hand fan for guests who may feel warm, along with boxes of sweets for offering, and even a glass and jug to provide water. Just outside Ramkali’s home lies a large farm, which inspired her to weave the leaves and flowers she observes there. And when night falls, the torch motifs at the end of the rug would light the way, just as they would for real guests walking through the village in the dark. In this way, the Manchaha by Ramkali, Sangeeta, and Anjani Devi is a heartfelt invitation, an open door, a glimpse of their world waiting to be explored.
