The Design Story
neherNeherManju and Anamika, a mother-daughter duo and partners at the loom, have created a stunning Manchaha rug that reflects the serene beauty of their surroundings. Amidst the Aravalli mountains, their loom is set on the veranda of their home, where the entire household buzzes with activity whenever a Manchaha is in the making. Though only two pairs of hands work on the loom, the love and support of their family—blessed with six daughters—infuse the entire process with warmth and joy. This rug took shape in the cool winters when the fog covered the mountains like a blanket, and the fields sparkled with the glistening streams of ice-cold water; Manju and Anamika drew inspiration from the landscape around them. The result is a hand-knotted rug that captures the fluidity and grace of flowing water from where the name of this creation came to be "Neher" (water streams), rendered in calm, soothing colors. Amidst the fluid patterns, a striking design choice by Anamika—a sharp mountain cutting through the waves—adds a dynamic element to their creation. Anamika, who balances her college studies with her weaving, leaves the loom in the capable hands of her mother, Manju, when she's away. Manju takes charge of the work, guiding the creation process with the experience and care only a mother can provide. Anamika affectionately calls her mother "the boss," a title that brings a smile and a laugh to Manju, highlighting the loving and playful dynamic between them.
