The Design Story
karigar ki pasandKarigar ki Pasand“My mind doesn’t work if I am not working on my loom,” says Surji Devi, a seasoned artisan whose work portrays her undying love for weaving. For Surji, her loom is her best friend and every day, she spends hours weaving on it and pouring her love through each knot. In this Manchaha, Surji has tried to weave everything that she deeply loves. She started strong by weaving a wall hanging called “Jhoomar” and her favorite “Leheriya” (Wavy) patterns. Along with that, she has woven the diamond-shaped “Shakkarpara”, a beloved Indian sweet snack. While skillfully portraying her abstract design sense, Surji has woven the ‘toran’ which hangs at her doorstep as a sign of warm welcome, and a necklace-earrings set for her love for jewelry. The most unique motifs the artisan has woven are a field of ‘lauki’ (bottle gourd) and a beehive full of honey, simply because she adores them. Whenever Surji feels stuck, she asks her husband to help and he always suggests some out-of-the-box ideas. Keeping all the cherished elements in mind, including her husband’s support, Surji named her rug "Karigar ki Pasand," which means "Artisan’s Choice."
