The Design Story
raakhiRaakhiRakhi is a Hindu festival that celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. On this day, sisters tie a sacred thread, called a rakhi, on their brothers’ wrists, symbolising love and protection. This Manchaha is titled Rakhi because it was woven in jail by inmates when the festival was just around the corner. The weavers—V.P. Singh, Yadram, and Ramesh—missed their sisters and their families dearly. While working on the loom, they began talking about how some of their sisters might come to visit them on Raksha Bandhan to tie them rakhis. But for V.P. Singh, Yadram, and Ramesh, there would be no visitors that day. In the middle of one lighthearted conversation, V.P. Singh suddenly cut a woollen thread he was weaving with and tied it around Yadram’s wrist. “You are my brother from today,” he declared. In that moment, the mood shifted—the sadness turned into celebration. The three friends began weaving colourful, decorative rakhi patterns into the rug, along with playful bandarmala designs like strings of colourful beads. What began as longing for family turned into a beautiful act of brotherhood, forever captured in the knots of Rakhi.
