The Design Story
prem ki leherPrem Ki LeherFrom sharing two sides of a loom to sharing their lives, Lalchand and Kamli have grown together as a couple, with weaving carpets being a significant part of their journey. In the beautiful village of Takarda in Rajasthan, this couple, wedded for over 35 years, weaves carpets side by side, sitting in silence along with rhythmic music of the loom. Creating Manchaha rugs opened a new realm for them. Weaving these rugs was as novel to them as the early days of their marriage. They had to communicate more, observe each other closely, and translate their thoughts onto the loom. It amused them how making Manchahas excited them even more, requiring them to brainstorm like young kids. While weaving their hand-knotted rug, Lalchand noticed the beautiful leheriya (wavy pattern) sarees Kamli wore to the loom during Saawan (Monsoon season) and began incorporating leheriya patterns into the rug. Kamali was surprised and so delighted to see how Lalchand depicted her sarees in their creation. The unique quality of their rugs lies in the seamless coordination of their designs—it never feels like two individuals have woven a single rug. Achieving this level of love and understanding is rare. Their rug is a symbol of their enduring love for each other and their craft, aptly named “Prem Ki Leher” (The Wave of Love)
