The Design Story
panihariPanihariIn the heart of Dausa Jail, Rajasthan, Chagan and Prem have woven a message of hope and resilience into their art. Their creation, named "Panihari," (a source to quench one's thirst) speaks volumes about their journey and their dreams. The carpet features two sets of intricately woven pots on either side. These three pots are positioned for people to come and quench their thirst, symbolizing relief from the scorching heat and the universal need for water. The rest of the hand-knotted carpet is woven in raw beige and brown tones, depicting the dry land they are all too familiar with. At the center of the hand-knotted carpet, a home with an open roof stands as a powerful symbol. This home represents their weaving workshop and the freedom they experience through their craft, even within the confines of jail. The open roof signifies hope and the belief that one day, they will be free. Chagan pointed at the weighing scale on the left and said, "Kanoon Andha Hota Hai," meaning the law treats everyone equally. He hopes that after serving his time and making amends, the law will recognize his efforts and grant him freedom soon. The black lines on the rug came from the fence installed on the walls, a constant reminder of their imprisonment. "Panihari" is more than just a carpet; it's a source of hope and a symbol of the enduring human spirit.
