The Design Story

dngar ke raste

Dngar ke Raste
Sugni Devi wove this rug by thinking about the mountains amidst which she grew up. At the centre, you can see mountain-like shapes rising one behind the other. They feel steady, like hills you see every day in the background of village life. Around them, she has drawn thin coloured lines. These lines move in different directions, almost like small paths crossing each other. It feels like journeys are happening at the same time. On one side, she filled a section with wavy, slanting stripes called ‘leheriya’. On another, she used tiny dotted motifs. Each block has its own rhythm, but they sit together, representing Sugni’s love for the mountains and land around her. This rug feels like a memory of fields, hills, and the many small roads that connect them. This is why she named her rug ‘Dungar ke Raste’, which means ‘The Paths of Mountains.’
