The Design Story

surma

Surma
Woven around the season of festivities, Kajal, Rinki, and Seema's Manchaha “Surma '' protects and cherishes their memories and bonds as sisters. Their rug is a truckload of their happy days hand woven together with little detailing of their lives. Kajal has woven a pattern of pani puri at the center of her rug, as it is her favorite street food. As they weaved their Manchaha rug, the festival of Navratri was going on and the village was lit up with inspiration. There was a huge temple next to their home and Seema used to visit the temple every day to offer her prayer to the goddess. While doing so, her eyes captured the beauty of the mud pots decorated with embroidered red clothes inside the temple. Expressing her fascination for the same, she has woven patterns inspired by them into the hand-knotted rug. On the other hand, Rinki, who is very fond of a river situated close to her house, witnessed that during heavy rainfall, the water level rises and high tides can be seen all over the shores. Seeking motivation from the same, she has crafted patterns inspired by high tides on the left-hand side of the rug making a beautiful array of silk yarns. Balancing one another’s likings, the three sisters have integrated patterns representing their togetherness and protecting their love for both their Manchaha rug and their bond as sisters.
