sofreh (c.1940)This antique 1940 Sofreh presents an Indian brown field that glows with natural wool tones, woven in a flat and finely textured ground. The field is framed by deep navy stripes that carry narrow geometric motifs, adding rhythm and contrast to the otherwise plain expanse. Two horizontal bands in green, red, and ivory interrupt the simplicity, each decorated with stylized animal motifs and continuous linear patterns, recalling the utilitarian yet decorative origins of Sofreh textiles. The balanced use of earthy brown with restrained borders gives this squarish piece a rare dignity, making it a distinctive antique weaving from Persia.
