The Design Story
ajoobaAjooba“I weave with three companions—my creativity, my thoughts, and my imagination,” says Santosh Devi, a weaver of rare grit and an exceptionally skilled artist, whose craft is guided by depth of thought and inner strength. Her latest Manchaha rug, Ajooba (Wonder), marks her fourth creation in the Manchaha journey, out of the 26 rugs she has woven so far. Santosh recalls that when the rug was finally complete and laid out before her, she was left astounded by its beauty. Throughout the weaving process, she had been in a meditative state—lines joining, thoughts flowing effortlessly, unaware of the masterpiece taking shape. She named it Ajooba, because it revealed to her something greater than what she thought she was weaving. The wavy leheriya and rhombus-like shakarpara were not deliberate designs, but emotions that wove themselves and found form in knots. For her, Ajooba happened in the moments when weaving turned into wonder.
