The Design Story
chaupaiChaupaiAnita didn’t just weave a rug; she set out to compose a poem—not with ink, but with yarn. That’s why she named her creation Chaupai, a nod to the four-line verse of Hindi poetry, where each line represents her world and every pause carries meaning. Her mornings were filled with laughter, as her daughter’s bangles jingled in the verandah, transforming into bright reds and cheerful oranges. There were also moments of stillness, particularly after a long day in the fields, when her shadow stretched long over the earth. Some boxes contained designs inspired by her favorite sarees—the ones she wore during weddings, harvests, and even a simple one when she was home alone, seeking comfort. Other boxes held fragments of the world outside her window, where birds pecked at seeds, flowers bloomed, hilltops rose, and she imagined the chevrons of birds in flight across the sky. Like any true artist, Anita didn’t confine her creations to a single mood; she allowed them to coexist. Some clashed, some merged, and some shimmered silently beside each other. In Chaupai, Anita’s loom became her pen. What emerged was a poetic landscape, a woven journal with no beginning and no end. Only flow.
