The Design Story
meri awaazMeri AwaazMahendra is a deaf weaver who collaborated with his mother Manni Devi to create the "Meri Awaaz" (My Voice) Manchaha Rug. Despite his disability, Mahendra expresses his inner thoughts through his art, weaving them directly into the carpet. This rug was crafted during the monsoon season, featuring intricate "Lehereiya" (wavy) designs right from the beginning. While Manni Devi draws inspiration from traditional designs, Mahendra interprets his own ideas freely, drawing from natural elements like sand dunes and lush forests. Although Mahendra cannot hear Manni's instructions, he weaves intuitively, often experimenting with vibrant colors and intricate patterns. He takes joy in incorporating their names in Hindi using colorful yarns, showcasing his unique artistic expression. Mahendra's disability does not diminish the strength of his artistic voice, which resonates powerfully through every thread of the rug he creates alongside his mother.
