The Design Story
ghumte phirteGhumte PhirteWhen Maya Devi and her friend Sakoti Devi sat on the loom to weave this Manchaha, Maya started narrating her journey to the Bhim Gatta temple. Sakoti got so interested in the story that on the first day itself, they decided to weave this journey into their rug. At the bottom, they created small boxes as their way of showing the sweets and snacks packed for the trip. They even added round laddoos, a detail that made them laugh as they worked. On the right, Maya wove tortoise motifs, inspired by a moment when she once saw a tortoise near a lake and wondered if she might spot one again on this journey. They also added flowers that she planned to offer at the temple. The lower half of the rug captures their preparations; the upper half follows the roads she took, with subtle patterns showing the temple perched on a hill. Through the weaving, they retraced the steps and relived the trip. They named the rug “Ghumte Phirte,” which means “Travelling Around.”
